Black Holes - an Essential Component of Our Universe

Black holes provide an important tool for testing the fundamental laws of the universe. This resource from the Institute of Physics, looks at the extreme physics associated with black holes, how we can spot them, and what roles they may play in galaxy formation.

This guide looks at stellar black holes and the supermassive black holes that probably exist at the centre of most galaxies. Current and future space based and ground based observatories are described, with a particular focus on how the UK is involved in these projects. The link between quantum mechanics, string theory and the mathematics of black holes is examined.
