Triple Science Case Study: Collaboration to Raise Career Awareness

From triple science support, this case study illustrates how a collaboration of schools worked alongside the local authority, higher education and industry to try to raise awareness of science careers among students at Key Stage Three and so encourage more of them to opt for triple science GCSEs.

Based in Cornwall, the case study includes some background information about the different organisations involved and how they worked to produce lessons highlighting career opportunities in science. The bulk of the resources were written during 'writers’ evenings' attended by teachers and representatives from Cornwall’s Mining and Minerals Planning Authority and Camborne School of Mines.

Trials in schools resulted in positive responses from both learners and teachers. ‘Follow up’ activities from each lesson might include visits to quarries, external speakers from the mining industry and visiting lecturers from local FE colleges.
