SATIS Revisited

The Association for Science Education (ASE) has updated and revitalised the groundbreaking SATIS (Science and Technology in Society) units from the 1980's and 90's. The units provide a wide range of strategies to cover the programme of study for How Science Works and the wide spectrum of science.

Materials consist of bright stimulus visuals, student activities including research, discussion, role plays, quizzes and board games with background information sheets to suit a wide range of student interests and abilities. They also contain guidance for teachers and an overview of the science considered.

Each SATIS Revisited unit is made up of several activities and includes:

  • a PowerPoint presentation with an introductory stimulus slide
  • a range of activities for different teaching and learning styles including data handling, quizzes, board games, practicals, small group discussions and class debates
  • guidance for teachers
  • clear links to How Science Works and different specifications
  • authenticity by links to industry and science in practice
  • a focus on science skills through links with the Learning Skills for Science project

opportunities for assessment for learning Each activity:

  • is relevant to topics within the main storylines
  • provides one of a number of different teaching and learning styles
  • is short and manageable in a typical lesson time
  • enables differentiation across a range of abilities

The original SATIS units are also available in the eLibrary.
