Placement: Defence Science and Technology Laboratory TY842
Location: Porton Down, Salisbury, Wiltshire, SP4 0JQ
Five day placements are available with the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) at their Portin Down site supported by £1000 of ENTHUSE bursary funding.
The final part of the scheme is a one-day professional development experience in London held 4-6 months after your placement.
This opportunity is suitable for STEM teaching professionals and/or professionals with additional responsibility for careers.
Going on a placement at Dstl Porton Down will help you to:
Inspire your students – see first-hand the careers available to students, through experiencing projects and meeting various professionals involved in STEM, working in areas across the Dstl. Understand about the future employment opportunities that the Dstl can can offer your students.
Build strong links with a local employer – connect with a local employer to develop staff and student experiences, with the aim of creating a longer term partnership. Help to boost your students’ confidence in making career choices and support the development of their employability skills. Find out more about the skills and competencies required for a career in the UK's defense, security, and prosperity sector, gain ideas for future collaboration (e.g. work experience, mentoring, speakers). Develop your own understanding on how the work of the Dstl can inspire your students to consider STEM careers and further study.
Enhance your advice on careers options– gain useful information about how to support students to make careers choices within STEM, taking into consideration future growth areas within STEM industries and both academic and vocational career routes.

Dstl’s work incorporates the entire STEM spectrum (including the social sciences) and Dstl staff work in multidisciplinary teams to solve problems and to provide advice. Your placement will include experience in a broad range of technical areas.
