Invite only (TBF): Literacy via primary computing – building vocabulary and embedding literacy skills CH407 / F01
Summary
The national curriculum states that teachers should develop pupils’ spoken language, reading, writing and vocabulary as integral aspects of the teaching of every subject and that teachers should develop pupils’ reading and writing in all subjects to support their acquisition of knowledge. This CPD will support you to embed the teaching of vocabulary effectively throughout your computing curriculum and explore opportunities for building reading, writing, and spoken language into computing lessons.
Computing has a high degree of subject-specific vocabulary. This technical vocabulary requires explicit teaching and is best taught in context. This CPD will build your own confidence and understanding of the subject-specific vocabulary required to teach the computing curriculum, as well as ways to teach this vocabulary to pupils to ensure a strong and accurate understanding.
You will also explore the opportunities within the computing curriculum and computing lessons to build literacy skills. You will identify opportunities within computing which support reading, writing and spoken language and look at how these can be taught in a way which maximises learning in both subjects.
Who is it for?
This course is aimed at computing subject leads who want to ensure that vocabulary is embedded in their subject and that cross-curricular opportunities with English are maximised to increase the profile of computing across the school.
