Summary

Inclusion in Science is ideal for any secondary teacher of science who is interested in closing attainment gaps by engaging hard to reach students, whilst enhancing their career. This is a course for individuals to improve their personal practice and will also put themselves in a strong position to lead inclusion across their department and school. Our Inclusion in Science Leaders programme runs alongside this, to support leaders to address inclusion across your department or school to improve attainment.

Who is eligible?

All teachers of KS3, KS4 and KS5 science in state-funded schools in England are eligible.

If you are training and are on a placement in a school you are eligible for this programme.

What topics are covered?

This is fully aligned to the Department for Education’s standards for professional development and to the National Professional Qualification (NPQ): Leading Teacher Development Framework

During this programme we will cover:

  • Module 1: Introduction to Inclusion 
  • Module 2: Bias in the classroom 
  • Module 3: Inclusive language 
  • Module 4: Inclusive Practice in the Science Classroom 
  • Module 5: Developing an inclusive curriculum
  • Module 6: Engaging Young People to Take Science Further

How will you learn?

This course will be delivered online as twilight sessions. You will be able to choose a day of the week that best suits your schedule. There 9 live online sessions and 6 gap tasks to complete over the 6 month period.

How long is this course?

8.5 hours of live sessions (10 hours for Science Leaders) over 6 months and up to 3 hours of pre-modules task.

Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • Develop your understanding of why inclusion is important for all students and how you can use this knowledge effectively.
  • Understand why it’s harder for some groups of students to engage in science.
  • Give every child a welcoming space to explore science and develop their learning.
  • Use the curriculum and your pedagogy to promote diversity and challenge bias.
  • Widen and broaden the aspirations of your students and help them see the possibilities available to them in science.
