Technician Conference RM606 / D07
Summary
Join us for this annual conference for science technicians which includes a full day of practical ideas and activities including keynote and workshop sessions throughout the day for biology, chemistry and physics.
2nd Technician for half price
If 2 technicians from 1 school would like to attend please email sussex-surreySLP@downlands.org and we will book you both in, with the 2nd place for half price. Please ensure technicians are registered on the STEM website.
Please see sessions below and email us with the 4 sessions that interest you the most. sussex-surreySLP@downlands.org
Prior to the conference you will be able to select your preferred options. We are following on from feedback last year to try and ensure the correct number of each session are available, it will help us to build a timetable for the day
1
What is this?
Do you have a random piece of possible physics apparatus in the back of your cupboard and have no clue what it is for or even if it works? Then bring it with you and put our two experts to the test and see if they can figure it out! – Only sign for this session if you have an item to bring
2
Microbiology for schools and colleges (basics)
An overview of key aseptic techniques for microbiology in schools, including media preparation, transferring micro-organisms and disposal of microbiological waste. There will be an opportunity for some hands-on practice.
3
Make and Take - Finding Planck’s Constant the Worthing way!
Why spend a fortune on kit for Planck’s constant when you can make your own!
In this hands-on session you will make the apparatus to measure Planck’s constant and then do the experiment to determine Planck’s Constant from the frequency and energy of light emitted from LED’s. Bring a calculator!
4
Moss Safari: Explore the wonders of a microhabitat
Imagine going on a safari, but in the microscopic world. Ordinary moss is full of animals and plants
5
Chemical Storage and Stock Control Systems with the Labexpert Software
This session is ideal for all technicians, providing relevant information on chemical and equipment storage. Includes legislation, storage types, requirements, groups, and GHS/CLP.
6
Make and Take – Simple soldering
Build your confidence with some simple soldering and then make your own tesla coil – would be great as a STEM club project too!
7
Health and safety –chemical handling &r prep rm management
8
Data Harvest - Wireless sensors for required practicals.
Use EasySense2 software with a wireless sensor in this hands-on workshop to show how to use datalogging to get the most out of your GCSE and A level required practical’s.
9
Distillation of Cherry Coke
A hands-on distillation experiment that’s certain to engage your students and complies with the current chemistry syllabus (With additional safety features explained).
Practical advice and tips and tricks on both choosing and maintaining different types of glassware and plasticware in the lab and prep room.
10
Confidence and fun in Physics
Looking at ramps and trolleys for measuring acceleration along with linear air track and electromagnetism. How to build a simple motor.
11
50 shades of science
A light-hearted but hopefully inspiring session to share ideas and celebrate the pleasure that school science can bring. John will share 50 tips, activities, experiences and tales from his 50 years in science education. There will be some hands-on challenges and extracts from his various shows.
12
Microscale Chemistry
Hands on look at different microscale chemistry practicals.
13
STEM Clubs
A look at schemes, competitions and resources available for STEM clubs.
14
Confidence with solutions and dilutions
Much of practical chemistry in schools and colleges is carried out in solution. In this session you will become more confident in making solutions of particular concentrations and appreciate when accuracy is needed and when approximation is fine. You will make a standard solution and learn how to dilute a stock solution to give a required concentration.
Who is the course leader?
Outcomes
Work towards successfully implementing the new skills and knowledge acquired. Describe and apply policies, procedures and actions that will lead to an effective and efficient technical service. Describe and explain safety implications and how to address them.
