South West Primary Science Share – With the Primary Science Capital Teaching Approach RN121 / C13

Summary

Join the South West Primary Science Share to hear the latest updates in Science education, share best practice with colleagues and make new connections with other teachers in the South West. Each half term, we’ll explore a distinct, topical area of the curriculum and how to make the most of your opportunities in the classroom.

The Primary Science Capital Teaching Approach (PSCTA) is designed to promote children’s engagement in science.  It is based on the idea that everyone has “science capital”.  This science capital reflects all your science related knowledge, interests, relations and assumptions.   Social equalities mean that everyone has different levels of science capital and some primary children already think that science “is not for them” and have “low science capital”.   The PSCTA approach is about improving teaching practice to better support these children and to raise their capital.  In this session, I aim to share an introduction to the PSCTA and to share a few concrete examples to help you “tweak” your own lessons in a way that will improve science capital in your own class.
