Chemistry subject knowledge enhancement for non-specialists RC356 / B04
Summary
This course is aimed at non-specialists that find themselves teaching chemistry, particularly to GCSE level. During the course, subject knowledge with an emphasis on the planning and delivery of practical chemistry, will be developed. Strategies will be developed to help with effective teaching of demanding aspects of the curriculum and participants will be signposted to resources that will help to develop their teaching of chemistry.
Who is it for?
Early Career Teachers, and teachers of Chemistry who are not specialists (Biologists, Physicists or another subject entirely).
What topics are covered?
Session 1 - Making effective use of practical work in Chemistry
Session 2 - Microscale Experiments
Session 3 - Demonstrations
Session 4 - Required Practicals
Session 5 - Preparing students for assessment
Outcomes
You will be able to:
- improve your subject knowledge of chemistry topics that relate to the curriculum, with emphasise on practical chemistry
- develop strategies to teach the tricky parts of the curriculum
- use models and understand common misconceptions to ensure teaching of the subject is effective
- utilise practical resources to help with development of subject knowledge
