The Wonderful World of Syphons SP200 / F85

The syphon has impacted many civilisations and defied scientific explanation. Used by the Egyptians to extract liquids, the Justice cup of Pythagoras and by the Victorians/Edwardians in making toilets less smelly. Syphons are also found in nature for used for locomotion, feeding and even reproduction. The syphon, a simple but powerful tool that has defied some of the greatest minds like Galileo, Aristotle and Pascal. Even today, once it was discovered syphons can also work in vacuums, have created competing theories to explain them.

In this session we will look at the history, application and physics of the humble syphon and consider how we can use the syphon to extend and enrich learning for all ages.
