Summary

Strategies for the effective development of Working Scientifically.

Ofsted put equal importance on the development of both substance (science subject content) and disciplinary knowledge – working scientifically (WS).

However in both planning and delivery, the latter is often considered as an afterthought.

Over the two 90 minute sessions we will consider within the context of upper KS2 and KS3 the following questions and provide strategies to support moving forward in each:

  • What is working scientifically and how can I communicate a clear image of this to my students?
  • How can I make practical activities more effective in supporting both gains in WS skills and substantive knowledge
  • How can I track the teaching of working scientifically within my own teaching?
  • What does progression in the various strands of working scientifically look like?
  • As a KS3 teacher what aspects of GCSE science should I consider when teaching and planning KS3 science?
  • How will I know if my students are Key stage 4 ready?
  • With the current pressures to cover content and fill gaps, how can I make demonstrations more effective?
  • What are the typical weak spots in WS that GCSE candidates loose marks on in exams?
  • What published resources are there that I can use to support topic areas like graph work and data analysis?
