Summary

This free CPD session run by Tracey O’Connor, a Teacher Coordinator for The Royal Academy of Engineering, will take you through how to use the Academies latest educational resource with your students.
The session is suitable for teachers of students aged 9-14 in the West Midlands area.
‘Future of Flight’ invites learners to explore innovations within flight technology.The resource covers topics such as:
  • Role of AI
  • Communication in aviation
  • Forces of flight
  • Materials science
  • Sustainability
There are seven challenges contained within the resource. Most of them can be adapted to be carried out with materials found around the house or in most classrooms.
Some of the challenges require some specialist equipment which you will receive on completion of the training session. These include:
  • Gliders
  • Wind tunnel kits
  • Fibre optic communication kits
  • Crumbles (easy to use programmable controllers)
  • Other electronic parts including a thermistor, motor and sparkle baton
The challenges are linked to the primary and secondary curriculum providing opportunities for learning across Science, Design & Technology, Engineering, Maths abs Computing. They can be used within lessons or in an after school club.
The session will provide opportunity for discussion with other practitioners in both primary and secondary settings. You will also be guided in how to apply for digital STEM badges as rewards for your learners for completing the challenges within the resource.

Additional information

For courses at the National STEM Learning Centre in York, fees include meals and accommodation for the duration of the course.
