Online, self-paced course. Primary school science teaching often involves sparking students’ imagination through practical activities. This online course explores the basics of online and offline teaching strategies for supporting learning at home and at a distance. You’ll consider the role of parents, home learning environments as well as how to keep up with practical science activities.

You’ll draw upon the resources you already have, use a variety of asynchronous teaching and learning tools, and design teaching sequences. 

Who is it for?

This course is designed for primary teachers of pupils aged 5-11 years, who are supporting parents and pupils with learning from home due to the coronavirus pandemic. Science and STEM subject leaders and heads of primary schools may also find this course useful for devising their approach to home teaching.

What topics are covered?

This two week course covers:
  • setting expectations for time management and learning routines.
  • the roles of teachers and parents in remote learning.
  • planning science learning activities for primary pupils at home.
  • engaging and motivating primary pupils in learning.
  • activities to support scientific enquiry.

This online, self-paced course can be completed flexibly. Participants can join and start this course at any time after the advertised date. Find out how our online CPD works.

How long is this course?

This course takes around three hours per week to complete and you do not need to be online at any specific time. You can take the course at your own pace.

Who is the course leader?


By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • design a blended approach to teaching primary science, with offline and online activities to support pupils learning from home.
  • plan to work with parents to support pupils learning at home.
  • evaluate a range of teaching strategies and tools, appropriate to your teaching context and teaching remotely.
  • identify primary science activities that can be undertaken at home.
