New to teaching A Level mathematics summer school MX500 / A20
Summary
Our highly acclaimed annual summer school returns this year but with a difference – we are going on line! Run in conjunction with AMSP, the course is designed for teachers with a secure background in the mathematics content covered in A level but who have little, or no, experience of teaching A level mathematics. The course is ideal for teachers about to start their first teaching post and will be expected to teach A level mathematics.
The course concentrates upon deepening pedagogical content knowledge in key areas of the A level curriculum and ideas for delivery of the over-arching themes of the A level curriculum.
There are ten online sessions covering1. Misconceptions, mistakes and links with GCSE mathematics2. Functions and graphs3. Proof4. Logarithms5. Modelling6. Differentiation7. Problem Solving8. Integration9. Mechanics10. Statistics
There will be two – one hour sessions per day starting at 10:00 and 14:00 with additional group activities from 11:00 to 12:00 and 15:00 to 16:00 each day
The course is designed for:
• Those who have just completed their initial teacher training programme and are about to take up their first post
• Practitioners who are new to teaching, (i.e. have no more than three years teaching experience).
Due to support from the AMSP, teachers employed in a state maintained school in England are eligible to a £100 discount on the course fee.

Outcomes
On completion of the course teachers will:
• have deepened pedagogical content knowledge in key areas of the A level curriculum • have developed a range of ideas for delivery of the over-arching themes of the A level curriculum• a deeper understanding of how key concepts that underpin A level mathematics are linked together across the subject
