Summary

 

Explore teaching strategies for a wide range of mathematical topics in chemistry A level. This course is ideal for teachers of chemistry who wish to improve their understanding of the mathematics required to be successful in chemistry at A level.

The course explores teaching strategies for a wide range of mathematical topics including:

  • proportional reasoning: dealing with proportionality in a chemistry context
  • graphs: drawing, reading information, finding gradients and equations, interpreting in a chemistry context
  • surface area and volume calculations
  • logarithms and exponential: what are they and how do we teach them?
  • understanding the Arrhenius equation

This course will be delivered remotely on the days and times detailed below. To participate in full you will need to ensure you have dedicated time away from the classroom, as you would if this were a face to face course. We will take regular breaks and structure the content so that it is interactive and impactful. You must attend all sessions in order to receive the bursary, sessions will not be recorded. Outcomes

 

 You will be able to:

  • improve your knowledge of the mathematical topics required for A level chemistry
  • have a deeper understanding of the reasons why students have difficulty applying their mathematical skills in a chemistry context
  • identify pedagogies to help address these issues
  • explore mathematics resources suitable for teaching A level chemistry
