Science for secondary probationers NS203 / A20
Summary
All PGDE science and final year undergraduates following a science with education programme in Scotland are invited to The Scottish Universities Science School (SUSS) which is held during their training year. Average attendance rates at SUSS are 95+%. The aims of SUSS are to provide:
- experiences relevant to teaching and additional to those normally available through a one-year PGDE course
- opportunities to meet and initiate professional networks with other teachers of science on a Scotland-wide basis
- an introduction to high quality continuing professional development for teachers of science
- opportunities to establish and maintain contact with a range of organisations that support school science educators
SUSS is held up as a model of good practice by both the Initial Teacher Education Institutes (ITEIs) and participants.
This course seeks to build on the practical experiences provided by SUSS and offer further opportunities to consolidate and enhance professional networks.
Through this programme, with practical work at its core, we will focus on enhancing the range of activities which participants will be able to use to support Curriculum for Excellence in their classrooms. More than half of the practical elements of the course will be devoted to subjects other than participants’ own area of expertise.
Combined with opportunities for professional networking, the course will offer participants a rich and vibrant programme that will enhance teaching and learning within their institutions.

• confirmation of an offer of a place on the course together with details on enrolment procedures• information on ENTHUSE bursaries and how to apply for such a bursary• a set of terms and conditions which you must meet in order to qualify for an ENTHUSE bursary
If you are a supply teacher you may still qualify for an ENTHUSE bursary – please contact SSERC to establish your eligibility.
Outcomes
Participants will be able to:
- demonstrate an enhanced portfolio of ideas for practical work both within and outside their own subject specialism
- use a wider variety of teaching strategies to promote pupils’ learning in science including demonstrations and scientific enquiry
- exemplify the importance of contemporary science and its applications in the context of the curriculum
- network with fellow professionals and explore mechanisms for ongoing support
- develop an action plan related to their teaching practice
