Summary

This programme of CPD covers teaching students with special needs (both those with and without an EHCP). The course looks at teaching these students, the resources & activities you can use with them and strategies for success. The course also includes a look at some of the most common specific needs identified in the DfE student census and strategies that can be used to support these learners in lessons. 

This course is for any secondary phase staff - early career stage teachers (especially those completing their ITE), NQTs, teaching assistants, anyone wanting a refresher on teaching SEND students.

The course will be delivered using the Zoom video conferencing platform.

 

There are four sessions in total:

Session 1 – The curriculum – adapting to the needs of SEND learners 

Session 2 – Resources – identify features of resources suitable for SEND learners and learn how to modify resources to make them suitable 

Session 3 – Literacy - Identify strategies to support the development of literacy to students with SEND within science lessons 

Session 4 - Strategies for teaching students with a range of common SEND including ASD, MLC, SEMH & communication issues

Outcomes

  • To be able to identify suitable strategies and activities for teaching students with SEND
  • To select suitable resources for teaching these learner
  • To clear misconceptions and introduce correct strategies for the most specific needs of learners in the latest DfE census
