Summary

This course in Centre Lathe Turning will develop knowledge and understanding of the functions, machining operations and its safe.

Participants will be given hands on practical tasks and one to one guidance on using this piece of equipment.

The key skills acquired will allow teachers to effectively deliver aspects of the SQA based Engineering Craft skills course and undertake a number of metalworking activities. The course, being open to teaching and technician staff will allow for appropriate support to be implemented into the classroom environment.

Practical work will be supported by demonstrations from professionals, guidance/support during tasks, key presentations where appropriate and theory notebooks.

There will opportunities for professional networking and participants will be offered a rich and vibrant programme that will allow them to enhance the teaching and learning within their institutions.

Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

  • emonstrate safety precautions necessary for the safe operation of the centre lathe.
  • to demonstrate how to set the tools and prepare the centre lathe for safe use.
  • to demonstrate how to operate the centre lathe to carry out the following basic functions safely.

- Facing Off

- Parallel turning

- Taper turning

- Drilling

- Threading

- Turning between centres

- Parting

- Knurling

- Boring

  • to demonstrate an understanding tool grinding angles and cutting speeds
  • to demonstrate an understanding of work holding methods
