Statistics NN508 / A18
Summary
The course will cover some aspects of the new Statistics GCSE and Unit AS2 Applied Mathematics, Section B, Statistics of the CCEA Maths Curriculum. In particular teachers will be able to examine how the statistical content of this unit can be taught through the use and interrogation of a large data sets and how to interpret real data presented in summary or graphical form; and use data to investigate questions arising in real contexts through examining the research at QUB and NISRA.
Outcomes
You will be able to:
- be able to understand data collection, types of data, and ways of analysing data
- to understand and locate large data sets available for use, and be able to investigate questions arising in real contexts
- to understand how these data sets are used in research and the increasing importance of Big data
- the importance and ways of cleaning data
be able to investigate methods of presenting data, including frequency tables for ungrouped and grouped data, box plots and stem-and-leaf diagrams and how researchers interpret their findings - to gain an appreciation the use of probability in research and its application
- be able to practically demonstrate binominal distribution and its application
- understand population data, sampling, presentation, variance, regression, correlation
