Summary

Not as passionate about physics as you are about chemistry or biology? Some of your students feel exactly the same way. Discover how you can exploit your empathy with them to help to develop their interest in physics at key stage 3 and GCSE.

Explore your feelings, fears and foibles about physics. Ask some of those physics questions which make your head hurt and discover some simple, but powerful, ways to teach physics concepts.

The course will introduce three toolkits to help you teach physics with passion:

  • enthusiasm toolkit - self-management strategies to help you teach topics which you may not previously have been particularly interested in

  • engagement toolkit - showcasing the diverse range of teaching approaches you can implement in teaching physics, with lots of examples

  • explanation toolkit - explaining is something we often take for granted as teachers, but what explanation techniques do you have in your toolkit when the concepts are especially abstract?

Then we'll put these toolkits to the test by using them to generate ideas for teaching the most challenging physics concepts which you can come with up.

The course developer and leader on this course is Paul McCrory.

Outcomes

You will:

  • have a greater knowledge of a range of engaging approaches and activities in physics to develop the interest and understanding of your students – especially those who are disengaged by physics
  • show increased understanding of a variety of techniques to explain abstract concept
  • demonstrate improved confidence and competence in designing and facilitating engaging physics activities in the classroom
  • be more aware of your feelings towards physics and how these can affect the enthusiasm with which you teach the subject
