Summary
Research has shown that using the outdoor environment can enhance science learning since the encounter with nature becomes holistic, where knowledge and experience interact with all the senses (Jordet, 2007; O’Brian and Murray 2007).
Explore how to reinforce children’s learning through outdoor experiences in an environment that is richly resourced with materials that can be adapted or used in different ways.
Experience the unique characteristics and features of outdoor learning, highlighting the positive impact on children’s well-being and development as well as the capacity for enhanced science learning.
The outdoor sessions will enhance personal encounters with nature which will suggest greater possibilities in the curriculum with the understanding that learning in the outdoors complements indoor learning and is equally important.
Outcomes
You will be able to:
• plan a diverse set of outdoor activities designed to support science learning outside the classroom
• understand a range of approaches to integrating outdoor learning with the curriculum
• encourage your pupils to use their senses and be physically active in their learning
