Start date

Duration
2 Days
Location
National STEM Learning Centre, University of York, York YO10 5DD How to find us

Summary

The natural world around us can be a really engaging opportunity for students but sometimes the curriculum doesn't allow time for this, outside a few ecology experiments. STEM Clubs, however, have the freedom to go outside and use the wider ecological world to put STEM into context for projects which excite students. STEM Clubs using the outside also get students thinking about the world around them and helps develop life skills and knowledge and a passion for our rich natural history. This is becoming more relevant to students lives as we think about topics such as pollution and species conservation.

Together, we will explore the range of sciences that can be applied in outdoor spaces and show you how to bring the outdoors indoors. We will discover wildlife gardening, wildlife monitoring and sampling, growing food, chemistry and physics in the natural world, science trails and forest school work.

STEM clubs are a powerful and highly enjoyable way to engage students with STEM subjects. It enables you to get students working on topics that interest them but are free from the time restrictions of your main curriculum. STEM Clubs can also be a way of developing attainment and retention in your main curriculum for students who are interested in STEM education and for those that need extra support through a more hands on approach achieved through a less formal STEM Club environment.

Involvement in a STEM Club can provide students with an opportunity to gain practical, teamwork and leadership skills and increase confidence in the STEM subjects, engaging them with further study of STEM subjects and the opportunity to discover STEM-related careers.

This is a residential course, fees include meals and accommodation for the duration of the course.
