Primary conference: wow science! Engaging young scientists RA124 / F03
Summary
Science is still a CORE subject where teachers can engage and enthuse children in their learning. This practical science conference offers a host of science activities to enhance and support science teaching in your setting. The day includes a keynote overview and a range of workshops. You may also have some fun along the way!
Outcomes
Please see specific entries for exact outcomes for the conference you are interested in, there will be the opportunity to:
- discuss current good practice in primary science
- recognise your own good practice, and identify areas for development
- reflect on ways to translate ideas to your school context, and plan for action

Notes
Workshops will include:
Wow science
This workshop offers some “wow” moments linked to curriculum 2014 that will hook in children’s interest and provide opportunities to come up with their own ideas based on their observations.
Observe, describe, explain (progression in science)
This workshop outlines how, by adopting this approach, you can encourage children to be real scientists and illustrates what is expected as the children progress from key stage 1 to upper key stage 2.
Hands-on primary science experiments with DataHarvest
We will be using data-loggers specifically designed for the primary classroom and doing experiments from reception to year 6, using the data-loggers on their own and with iPads and laptops.
Making it stick
The correct use of the correct term helps children describe and explain their findings in science. However it can take a long time to learn this technical vocabulary. This workshop offers ideas to help teach this.
Working scientifically
Working scientifically is a big part of curriculum 2014 and centres around enquiry and investigating questions. Science questions can be investigated in a variety of ways. This practical workshop makes clear what the different types of enquiry are and gives examples of when it is appropriate to use these.
Pencil free assessment
Children can be great at science but lack literacy skills. When we make assessments in science it should be based on their abilities in science. This workshop illustrates ideas to make assessments without children needing to write.
Big, messy, loud: taking science outside
Some of the science curriculum requires children to work outside however there are many other opportunities where it may be better to be outside. This workshop outlines some of these.
