Summary

Secondary Science Conferences have been highly successful in Kent and Medway in recent years. They have provided updates on the latest initiatives, valuable guidance for subject leaders and opportunities for networking.

All science teachers are invited to attend the 2017 conference. Two themes running through the day with optional workshops will ensure that there is something for everyone.

Theme One: Science Capital
This is a concept that can help us to understand why some young people participate in post-16 science and others do not. In particular, it helps shed light on why certain social groups remain under-represented and why many young people do not see science careers as being for me.
Dr Heather King is a Research Associate at King’s College, is a member of the Enterprising Science team and has contributed to a range of projects relating to the engagement of various social groups in science and technology.

Theme Two: Addressing the Challenges of the New Science GCSEs
Ed Walsh is an education consultant specialising in science.  A teacher for 20 years and a team leader for 12 of those, he was Lead Science Consultant with Cornwall Learning for many years.  He is an author, editor, curriculum developer and CPD provider. Ed will lead a session for all that will include:

  • understanding the drivers behind the changes going through
  • identifying the headline changes – mathematical demand, extended writing, linked ideas and Working Scientifically - along with the emerging detail about how this will impact upon assessment
  • exploring the implications behind the changes, including provision for lower attainers, science as a five-year course and the role of KS3

Optional workshops will build on these themes and will include:

  • science for students targeted at grades 1-3
  • strategies for developing literacy with a focus on written outcomes
  • teaching and assessing Working Scientifically
  • preparing students for practical-based questions in examinations
  • increasing Science Capital with the help of STEM Ambassadors
  • running a successful STEM Club.

Outcomes

You will be able to:

  • apply the principles from the Science Capital project to boost engagement and interest in science
  • understand the implications of changes at KS4 and plan responses suited to your school
  • take away ideas and resources from workshops that match your interests
