Summary

Learn about the astronomy specifications on the new GCE physics syllabus, and overview the Earth and Universe section of the GCSE syllabus. Through research talks and practical examples participants will gain an understanding of the formation of the solar system, Doppler and red shift, Hubble's Law and the age of the universe, and how this relates to the Big Bang. The Armagh Planetarium will be will used to help visualise how astronomers explore the distant universe.

Outcomes

  • to understand the difference between comets, meteors and asteroids, and their role in the formation of the Solar System
  • to understand the difference between the Doppler shift and red shift
  • to be able to calculate the Doppler shift for a star and the red shift for a galaxy
  • to be able to calculate the distance to a galaxy based on its red shift
  • develop their understanding in relation to the expanding universe
  • to gain an appreciation of how the universe was formed and the relation to its expansion
