STEM activities for adults

Hi all

I am potentially running a STEM session for teaching staff, ostensibly on careers, but would like to run an activity/activities for non STEM staff that would build confidence or be quite novel.  Ideas please!

Thanks

Alison

Hi Alison

Not sure where you are based but the ASE Northern Conference in Sheffield in November has a focus on Careers, I know this doesnt help in the short term, but take a look at the sessions once they are up on the ASE web site, and the event is open for bookings, see if it ticks your boxes.

Thank you Linda!  I will certainly look into booking that especially as it is in the city of my alma mater.

Sounds interesting! What kind of confidence are you looking to build? Awareness of STEM sectors? skills shortage? STEM skills? Entry routes into STEM? Why STEM?

How much time have you got?

I'll have a think if you can nudge me in the right direction?

Hi Gemma

Thank you for replying. I have a couple of ideas:

1.  There was a call for volunteers for CPD at work :). I hope to run a People Like Me session (using the WISE resources) to help colleagues or parents/guardians of daughters look at STEM careers.  It would be nice to extend it with a (team) activity to show different aspects of STEM careers using the adjectives that form the basis of the resource. e.g creative/ cooperative/ persistent etc.  Then maybe run this again at a parents evening or open day.

2. The other session I have in mind is to build awareness of the STEM careers and skills shortages. Running the initial diagnostic survey for the partnership revealed that knowing how to work with employers and using real life contexts to support careers education were areas of really low confidence. I could invite a local STEM ambassador so I can highlight what they can do for us locally with our lessons and link to your FutureLearn course.  But it is always great to run a practical activity to tie in with this.

All ideas gratefully received!

Hi Alison, I think I have something that can support point 2. We've updated the STEM Insight supporting resources to include a CPD session to run with colleagues around careers learning.

You'll find it here: https://www.stem.org.uk/community/groups/37257/after-your-placement/130623 Its listed under preparing and running your short CPD.  It includes slides, discussion activities and a card sort that might help structure the department conversation. Feel free to drop me a line to discuss / share ideas - we're always keen to increase the support we offer, it sounds like you have some really interesting stuff happening your way!!

Hi Gemma

Ah thank you so much! The resources look just right for what I want to do and will make putting the CPD proposal together so much easier.
