I think so. I wasn't sure that I had managed to join tho course but I think it starts in November. I joined because I am making the jump from primary education to secondary education. Not only that but I will be starting in a secondary PRU. I'm starting to get very nervous too. How about you, why did you join the course.

I did the course at the end of last term. I thought this was the place to keep up-to-date with others who had done the course. They may well be running it again in November, I don't know about that. I found the course very useful as a reminder of things I already knew and polishing up on my skills. I have been teaching secondary science for 17 years now but you are never too old or too experienced to learn new things. I found it extremely useful and picked up on several new ideas. It was also very reassuring to realise that what I was doing wasn't too bad at all. As experienced teachers we spend alot of time on our own with our students and rarely get to observe other people teaching. I was in a position where I was mentoring someone else and felt the need to do the course in order to focus my thinking. To be honest I was looking for ideas to help my collegue but ended up doing the course myself and then passing on the ideas to her.

As for your new job, good luck! I'm sure some of your students will benefit from your primary skills particularly with regards to basic numeracy and literacy. As secondary teachers we are not taught how to teach reading. I have often wished that I had those skills in order to support some of my weaker readers. In terms of advice, I would just say that your students have probably ended up at a PRU after a long time of failing to succeed in a 'normal' classroom. Hopefully you will have small groups that you can get to know well. Just remember these are often young people who find it very difficult to trust people as they have often been let down, repeatedly. What they need from you is consistancy, consistantly!
