Pugmill

Hi All

We have a fairly large Pugmill. After processing, obviously there is still clay in the feeder. How do you go about cleaning this out? Do you actually take it apart?

Id like a really easy way of mainting the pugmill and would really appreciate any tips, as digging out dry clay is not fun or good for the pugmill!

Many thanks

Lindsay

Hi Lindsay,

Just bumping your post in the hope that a ceramics technician might spot it and be able to help.

Hi Lindsay, if you are changing clay bodies then unfortunately yes you will have to take the pugmill apart and thoroughly clean it to avoid contamination. It is quite time consuming and you need to make sure its really tightened well when doing it back up to avoid clay seeping out through the machine's seam!

If you are continually using the same clay and haven't got caps for the end or feed (which I haven't) I would wrap the end really well with plastic and tie it off/put elastic around to keep in place. I push plastic into the top of the feed to seal it (sometimes put a wet cloth in before if I know its going to be a while) and then wrap a plastic bag over the top. This works for me, the clay doesn't dry out. I simply unwrap/remove the plastic, do the reclaiming/pugging and the wrap those two areas back up until the next session.

Hope this is of some use, Michaela
