IST Technical Conference - 20th Sept

Our colleagues at the Institute of Science and Technology would like to invite our members to attend their annual technical conference on the 20th September. Last years event, in Leicester, was absolutely fantastic and well worth the trip. Keynote speakers

Dr Kianoush Nazarpour
Talk: Star Wars, Terminator, Bionic Hands - Science Fiction or Reality?

Kia Nazarpour is currently a Reader in Biomedical Engineering at the School of Engineering, Newcastle University. His research is motivated by the potential of prosthetics to restore function to individuals with sensorimotor deficit, by transforming thought into action and artificial nerve stimulation into perception.

Professor Sir Doug Turnbull
Talk: Diseases affecting the small circle of life

Sir Doug is Professor of Neurology at the University of Newcastle and Honorary Consultant Neurologist at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He is also the National lead of the National Highly Specialised Services for Rare Mitochondrial Diseases of Children and Adults.

In addition to the Keynote sessions there will be a range of 15 workshops available and the full programme will be released closer to the date, but here are a few tasters of what will be on offer:

  1. CERN will be giving a talk on cutting edge technologies
  2. A specialised look into the history and ethics of laboratory animal work
  3. Take an exciting look into futuristic e-motorbikes
  4. Have a look into performance management for technical staff
  5. Health & Safety workshops including a centrifugation clinic
  6. The importance of Professional Registration at any age

The conference also provides opportunities for technical staff to actively participate through poster presentations, and this provides an excellent opportunity to hone their presentation skills, and there will be a prize of £150 Amazon vouchers for the winner of the Best Poster Award.
