Dear all,
I hope you are well. I am posting this topic to write about the recent RNE in Leicester at DMU. I hope you find it useful and interesting, particularly if you were unable to attend.
Well… what a delightful day it turned out to be. The event had started with an encouraging and insightful talk by Dr Simon Oldroyd, Pro Vice Chancellor/Dean of Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at De Montfort University. Simon spoke about the importance of technical staff in HE and the contribution this workforce brings to many aspects of education. For example, with direct contact with students and academic staff, the contribution of technical staff has a positive impact of student learning, NSS, academic research and achieving the strategic goals of an institution. This is important because the role of a Technician has evolved/is evolving; therefore, the provision for CPD and other forms of development needs to change. HEaTED is a great organization that takes this into account and supports the right development of technical staff.
There were some HEaTED updates from Dr Katherine Forsey along with some good lunch. A communication workshop using rope was a great way to demonstrate different forms of team working and communication. The spaghetti and marshmallow challenge was so much fun, but also very relevant. This challenge demonstrated that everyone has a different way of working. Challenging the way we listen and speak to others (students/staff) was useful in a diverse and ever-changing education environment.
The afternoon had some fun and informative tours and activities. Attendees had the opportunity to participate in a Medieval Tour based around Richard III. There was a tour of the new Art and Design building at DMU, where attendees has a chance to see glass blowing and a Harry Potter like staircase. Attendees made new music in the recording studios, learning how a piece of music is created using real instruments and recording software. The day was ended the only way possible… Ice cream making using liquid nitrogen!
I am happy to answer any questions or queries, just send me an email. I would love to hear from you.
Regards,
