HEaTED East Midlands Regional Network Event
The University of Nottingham, 9th April 2013
Venue: Room A17, Mathematical Sciences, University Park Campus, University of Nottingham, Nottingham, NG7 2RD. A map of the campus is available HERE along with travel and parking information. Please note that Mathematical Sciences is Building 20 on the site map.
Audience: Technicians, Technical Managers, Technical Team Leaders and Staff Development Professionals from the East Midlands Region.
Brief: The East Midlands HEaTED Regional Network provides a forum for discussion and communication between Technical Managers, Technical staff, and Staff Development/HR colleagues from across the Region. The Network promotes training events, the sharing of knowledge, skills and best practice amongst Technical staff and increased awareness of the opportunities and facilities provided by HEaTED and member institutions. At this time of significant change in the HE environment maintaining a focus on high quality provision of services and taking staff forward through these changes becomes increasingly important.
Objective: To establish a core community of well-networked Technical staff from all levels to lead, manage and deliver services and support to academia for the future.
Agenda:
12:45pm - 1:15pm Lunch, Tea/Coffee and registration
1:15pm - 1:30pm Welcome - Steve Taylor, University of Derby & HEaTED East Midlands Regional Network Coordinator

1:45pm - 2:45pm Discussion Topics as suggested by attendees at the previous meeting:
• Should HEIs make registration “compulsory” as a proof of quality? (Or at least recognise the importance and value) This could include formation of career structure and link to performance review.
• How can HEIs tackle the issue of Teaching/Learning facilitating and proof of quality?
• How can HEIs recognise technician support in independent studies/project work as part of CPD?
• Can HEaTED help to persuade my Management/Institution that a course is necessary? (and therefore provide support)?
• How can HEaTED influence the management structures and approaches in our institutions?
2:45pm - 3:00pm Tea/Coffee/Biscuits
3:00pm - 3:30pm Address by Kelly Vere, University of Nottingham and author of TES article Firm Footing
3:30pm - 4:00pm Discussion Topics, focussing on the HEaTED Online Groups:
• Sharing resources: Is it possible for technical staff to arrange to share labs, equipment and technical expertise?
• Collaborative schemes/projects across institutions: can we use the HEaTED network to create a "bottom up" approach?
• Troubleshooting/Sharing technical problems and solutions: Technicians can be very much more in touch with each other now through the regional and national networks. The online groups discussion for example can be an excellent way to do this.
• Sharing supplier/procurement information. Could we set up a joint list? or just simply have a question and answer set up on the Online Group?
4:00pm - 4:15pm Wrap up; action points; discussion points for next meeting - Steve Taylor
